DOVE’s commitment to combating substance abuse and addiction was manifested through our comprehensive intervention programs, Through DDAC District De Addiction Centres and IRCAs Integrated Rehabilitation Centres:

DDAC – District De Addiction Centre

 Alwal of Medchal Malakajgiri District, of Telangana

We are running the District De Addiction Centre at Alwal of Medchal Malakajgiri District, of Telangana with Government of India Grants. This DDAC would provide comprehensive facilities hitherto being provided by IRCA, ODIC, CPLI together in one roof.

Through these DDACs:

  • Conducting primary prevention activities through awareness programs among the vulnerable and affected community
  • Engage in risk mitigation of substance use among children/ adolescent/youth by :
  • Identifying Hot Spots
  • Preventing substance use
  • Delaying initiation of substance use
  • Identify and train selected peer educators in the community
  • Implement early prevention education through life skill training led by trained peer educators
  • Provide awareness about referral and linkage to counseling, treatment and rehabilitation services for substance dependent adolescents identified in the community
  • Identifying adolescents and other individuals subjected to substance use and facilitating their referral/ admission into Rehabilitation Centers/ Drop In Centres.
  • Provide a whole range of services which includes treatment, after care and rehabilitation including skill development for Whole Person Recovery (WPR) of dependents;
  • Undertake drug demand reduction efforts to address all forms of illicit use of any substances and ensure overall well being of humankind;
  • Alleviate the consequences of substance dependence amongst individuals, family and society at large.

As per the 2019 National Survey report, In India 16 Cr persons consume alcohol, 3.1 cr use Cannabis and 2.26 Cr use Opioids. More than 5.7 Cr individuals are affected by harmful or dependence on alcohol and need help for their alcohol use problem, about 25 lakh suffer from cannabis dependence and approximately 77 lakh individuals are estimated to need help for their Opioid use problems

Various studies reported that substance initiation begins at an early age due to vulnerabilities perpetuated through acute poverty, social inequalities and other social reasons. Poly substance use (consumption of more than one substance at a period) is common among adolescents.

Children and adolescents living in the street, slums and homeless, become particularly vulnerable to substance abuse in such high risk circumstances. Relapse rate is also high in this group due to lack of family and community support compared to others. young people, they may be empowered to prevent and disseminate information on substance abuse prevention. The notion is that the young people learn from each other, that peers have greater credibility among young people and have a shared cultural background. For this purpose, peer led intervention would be the appropriate strategy for reducing the substance use among the young people.   • Conducting outreach activities, awareness campaigns, and community-based interventions to raise awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse.
  • Providing counseling, de-addiction treatment, and rehabilitation services to individuals and families affected by substance dependence.
  • Offering vocational training, skill development, and livelihood support to facilitate the reintegration of recovered individuals into society.
  • Collaborating with educational institutions, civil society organizations, and government agencies to promote a culture of prevention and support.
