CPLI- Community Based Peer-Led Intervention Project for Early Drug Use Prevention among Adolescents

     

                             

As per the 2019 National Survey report, In India 16 Cr persons consume alcohol, 3.1 cr use Cannabis and 2.26 Cr use Opioids. More than 5.7 Cr individuals are affected by harmful or dependence on alcohol and need help for their alcohol use problem, about 25 lakh suffer from cannabis dependence and approximately 77 lakh individuals are estimated to need help for their opioid use problems

 

Various studies reported that substance initiation begins at an early age due to vulnerabilities perpetuated through acute poverty, social inequalities and other social reasons. Poly substance use (consumption of more than one substance at a period) is common among adolescents.

Children and adolescents living in the street, slums and homeless, become particularly vulnerable to substance abuse in such high risk circumstances. Relapse rate is also high in this group due to lack of family and community support compared to others.

young people, they may be empowered to prevent and disseminate information on substance abuse prevention. The notion is that the young people learn from each other, that peers have greater credibility among young people and have a shared cultural background.  For this purpose, peer led intervention would be the appropriate strategy for reducing the substance use among the young people.

DOVE implemented Community Based Peer Led Intervention (CPLI) project under National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) at Hyderabad District of Telangana with the Kind Support from NISD (National Institute of Social Defense) Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, New Delhi

 

 

The Following Activities are implanting through CPLI project in Hyderabad District  

 

  1. Identifying adolescents subjected to substance abuse and   facilitating their admission into Rehabilitation Centers IRCAs / ODICs

 

  1. Outreach activities in the community among young vulnerable population for community mapping and assessment
  2. Identification and Training of youth as Peer Educators to lead peer led community intervention
  3. Behavioural change communication sessions for community by Peer Educators
  4. Individual and group counselling
  5. Screening and assessment of clients on substance use disorder
  6. Ensure referral and linkage to service centres
  7. Complimentary therapies including art, music & dance for early recovery
  8. Follow up care including family counseling
